How to Become a Bridal Makeup Artist

Are you interested in a career in bridal makeup? If so, this blog post is for you! In this post, we will discuss what it takes to become a bridal makeup artist and the skills you need to succeed in this field. We will also provide tips for starting your own business. So, if you are ready to start your journey toward becoming a successful bridal makeup artist, keep reading!

What is a bridal makeup artist?

A bridal makeup artist is a professional makeup artist who applies specialized wedding hair and makeup. This type of makeup artist most often does makeup for the bride. However, in recent years, bridal makeup artists have also done makeup for the bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom.

A bridal makeup artist’s primary goal is to make a bride and her attendants feel beautiful on their wedding day. The makeup must look perfect in person and on camera in the bride’s portraits and wedding videos.

However, the most essential part of bridal makeup is its durability. The look must also be able to last the whole day, whether the ceremony is indoors in the air conditioning or outside in the heat, and survive eating, drinking, and dancing at the reception.

How do I become a bridal makeup artist?

Research

The first step in how to become a bridal makeup artist is researching. If you are still in high school, you might want to research makeup artistry schools that offer exceptional, hands-on makeup training.

You should also research current beauty trends and stay up-to-date on what contemporary brides are looking for with their bridal makeup. Are there any celebrity wedding makeup trends you should be aware of? What styles of makeup do you want to provide?

For bridal makeup, you could also start researching the difference between traditional cosmetics and airbrush makeup.

Education and Practice

Pursuing an education in makeup artistry can provide you with a better understanding of the field and give you a competitive advantage. Makeup artistry school will also help you gain the skills, tools, industry connections, and knowledge needed to start your career.

To choose the right makeup school for you, you should start by looking at their admissions requirements, school curriculum, coursework, and other features of their diploma programs. At L Makeup Institute, we offer a course called “Mastering the Art of Beauty” that provides in-depth, hands-on beauty makeup artistry training and practice. This course will teach you about:

  • Bridal and beauty makeup supplies and tools and their uses
  • Appropriate sanitation and hygiene practices, especially when working with multiple clients
  • Industry terms and vocabulary words
  • How to identify the different face and eye shapes
  • Understanding color theory as it relates to makeup artistry
  • The mechanical aspects and use of airbrush equipment
  • Job education such as creating your portfolio, personal image, your brand, marketing yourself, earning potential, building your resume
  • …and so much more!

Employment and Networking

After going to makeup artistry school, newly trained bridal makeup artists can often build their portfolio and gain connections by doing wedding makeup for their friends or family members and using their wedding photos on their website.

Once you take on your first few clients, their photographs and testimonials will lead you to many more clients.

An excellent way for a makeup artist to gain new clients is to have a social media profile. Keep your social media up to date and post pictures of your clients and their testimonials frequently.

You should also consider joining wedding groups on Facebook based on your location. In those Facebook groups, brides will post when searching for a makeup artist and their reviews of bridal makeup artists after their wedding. It’s an excellent way to promote your business and connect with potential clients.
